Intravital Microscopist Specialist

The position of Intra-Vital Microscopy (IVM) Specialist will work within the Crick Advanced Light
Microscopy Science and Technology Platform (CALM STP) to support the imaging needs of scientists
at the Francis Crick Institute.

The IVM Specialist will be a member of the CALM STP. They will report to the Head of Biological
Research Facility for BRF related issues and to the Head of CALM for scientific guidance. Beyond the
provision of basic training and assistance they will help select research projects to support in greater depth, and work on these projects in close association with CRGs. The role is at the Senior Laboratory Research Scientist (SS3) level.

The IVM Specialist will develop and support the use of intra-vital microscopy within the Crick. They
will be integrated within the In Vivo imaging group and serve as an interface to the CALM STP. They
will oversee the procurement and maintenance of equipment, and its subsequent use for research
projects. The IVM Specialist will maintain a state of the art multi-photon IVM system based on a
commercial platform with custom modifications developed as required to achieve specific
experimental goals. They will work closely with Crick research groups to develop intra-vital
microscopy projects based on the use of this equipment. Project work will encompass advice and
consultation on experimental design, assistance with the experimental work in accordance with Home Office regulations, and help with data analysis.

  • Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
  • Maintain state of the art equipment for intravital multi-photon microscopy.
  • Extend system performance through modification of equipment features such as
    illumination and detection pathways to achieve specific experimental goals.
  • Assist Crick research groups with the design and implementation of IVM experiments.
  • Oversee all aspects of experimental work, including adherence to Home Office
  • Assist with the analysis, interpretation, and presentation of IVM data.
  • Develop an approach to IVM, which will help bridge the gap between cellular imaging and
    biomedical imaging.
  • Communication to internal and external audiences.

  • A degree and PhD in a physical or life science
  • Significant experience using advanced light microscopy to answer biological questions
  • Advanced experience using multi-photon IVM
  • Experience with surgical procedures
  • Experience working under the authority of an animal license
  • Strong image analysis and presentation skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a team
  • Ability to work independently when required
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to prioritise work and manage multiple
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the abilities to analyse and think creatively


  • Home Office Personal License
  • Experience with lymph node imaging
  • Experience imaging fluorescence resonance energy transfer, especially using fluorescence
    lifetime imaging
  • Implantation of imaging windows
  • Confocal microscopy experience
